Wine for WheelchairsWine for Wheelchairs uses wine as a medium to purchase wheelchairs for those in need. We work with wineries including Lookout Ridge to host events, offer specials, and draw attention to the worldwide need for wheelchairs. On Valentine's Day 2008 for example, Arrowood Winery hosted a wine tasting, and all $6,000 in proceeds were donated to purchasing wheelchairs.
Over 150 million* children, teens and adults worldwide are in need of a wheelchair but cannot afford one. In many developing countries, the only way for a person with physical disabilities to be mobile is to crawl along the ground or be carried by family or friends. An all-too-common reality is that many people stay in bed or the corner of a room for years at a time.
The donation of a wheelchair will instantly and dramatically change an individual's life:
In cooperation with Lookout Ridge Winery and The Wheelchair Foundation, Wine for Wheelchairs donates wheelchairs to needy individuals around the world when you purchase wine. The photos on our home page feature recipients of wheelchairs through the Wine for Wheelchairs program.
Are you a wine lover? You can purchase wine and we will make a donation in your name. Did we inspire you? You can make a donation directly to the Wheelchair Foundation.
Lookout Ridge WineryGordon Holmes, founding publisher of Research Magazine and Buyside Magazine, achieved a dream with Lookout Ridge Winery. Now Holmes is helping others dream with his Wine for Wheelchairs program. Around the time he started the winery, Holmes' wife Kari was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Eventually, she needed a wheelchair to get around. While attending a wine event, Holmes met Ken Behring, founder of the The Wheelchair Foundation. Ken's philanthropical organization gives wheelchairs to impoverished, impaired people in poor countries around the world. Seeing how a wheelchair impacted his wife's life, Holmes made a decision: Lookout Ridge would donate a wheelchair in the name of every person who purchased a case of Library wines or a bottle of Current Release wine.
